The largest rain forest in north america
This jungle, located mostly in Chiapas, Mexico, containing most of the biodiversity of the country. The Usumasinta river is inside this jungle. Because of the danger to disappear that Lacandona has, this rain-forest has become a protected area. Since 1979, Montes Azules which forms part of Lacandona, has become a biosphere reserve as part of the Man and Biosphere program conducted by the UENSCO (UNESCO, 2012).
This natural area is important to be preserve because it holds hydrological resources, animal species, and vegetation that its crucial for the sustainability of the country. Studies made by Parkwatch reveal us that this reserve contains "30% of the country's hydrological resources" (Parkswatch, 2004, p. 1). It hold 341 species of birds of which 28 are endangered, 118 species of amphibians that includes frogs, snakes, crocodiles, iguanas and salamanders. Some of this amphibians are endangered species such as the Amercian Crocodiles, Morelet's crocodile, the american river turtle, the iguana, the snapping turtle, and the leopard frog. Finally, it also holds 114 mammal species, out of those species 17 are Mesoamerican endemic species, and 13 species such as Jaguar and mexican black howler monkey are endangered. Furthermore, the vegetation that Lacandona holds is also large with 3400 vascular plans (Parkswatch, 2004, p. 5).
In this rain-forest are also remaining native communities of the Maya culture, which is important to preserve the country' culture as well as to maintain the Eco-tourism that Chiapas has.
